Writing a catchy header message hooks readers
Most online dating sites allow users to write a catchy header in large type that appears directly below their username. These are the first words others read about you, so avoid using standard greetings. Try using humor or filtering headlines instead. Be warned: don't use cliches such as "ace in the hole," "cute as a button" or "mover and shaker".
Be funny but be specific; don't simply write "Wanted: Males 24-30 near DC." Try this header instead "Looking for a DC man who likes to lobby tennis balls instead of politics."
Bad Style
- You get me hot
- Have I seen you around?
- I've got the brains. You've got the body.
Good Style
- Romantic men seem to be extinct. If you're extinct, contact me now.
- Tech-Savvy Luddite
- I'm a man trying to balance between financial security, happiness, and Nintendo Wii.
- Come sail away with this Styx fan
- Born in Boise, heading for Barbados
If you're a person who is looking for something very specific (or have an unusual quirk), you may want to state that up front. "I love a man in uniform. Military men, apply within." However, caution should be used when using this restrictive filter. Your restriction may seem more negative than you intend. "Marathon Partner Wanted," may weed out very athletic daters, for whom thinking about running 26 miles in one day makes their knees ache.
